World Backup Day: A Good Reason to Audit Your Clients' Server Backup
World Backup Day, celebrated every March 31st, is a useful reminder to take a step back from the day-to-day and ask whether your clients' backup setups would hold up under pressure. For many SMB environments, the honest answer is probably that they haven't been tested recently enough to know. With 16% of SMBs never backing up their data at all, and ransomware now hitting smaller businesses at more than twice the rate of larger organizations, the gap between assumed protection and verified recovery capability is a real business risk for your clients.
For World Backup Day, we put together a practical guide that covers six server backup fundamentals worth revisiting, including identifying and prioritizing critical data, choosing the right mix of local and cloud storage, applying the 3-2-1 rule, properly scheduling and automating jobs, running regular restore tests, and securing backups against ransomware.
Social Media Post of the Month
According to claims data from cyber insurer Resilience, 40% of losses since the company's inception have come from business interruption, primarily caused by ransomware events and system failures. Their recommendation? Immutable backups.
On our LinkedIn post, we take a closer look at the study and explain what immutable backups are, when SMB clients need them, and how to incorporate them into a hybrid backup strategy, a topic that cyber insurance renewals are increasingly forcing MSPs to address anyway.

The Generalist MSP Is a Losing Strategy. Here's What's Replacing It.
Two recent articles from industry news outlets have highlighted that the generalist MSP model—built on hiring technically skilled engineers and taking on any client in need of IT help—is no longer a winning approach. In a recent interview with Channel Insider, Harbor IT's CFO Hannah Paige and CRO Michael Kourkoulakos argued that advances in AI and the increasing complexity of cybersecurity have fundamentally changed what clients are willing to pay for. Today, clients can solve many routine problems on their own. What they can't replicate is a partner who already understands their industry, including its compliance requirements and operational risks, without needing to be taught.
A companion piece from ChannelPro Network goes further into what making that shift actually requires, starting with taking industry-specific compliance seriously, tailoring SLAs to vertical expectations, training staff on specialized tools, and building scalable processes without diluting the expertise clients are paying for.
The shift toward specialization raises a question for MSPs that offer backup services: Is your backup offering positioned as a differentiated, provable service, or is it a background line item? If you're not sure, this month's blog post might be worth a read.
"The MSP Backup Business Is Changing" is the first installment of a five-part series that outlines the changes we see in client expectations and how MSPs should respond. We discuss the causes of this change and take a closer look at the accelerating shift from "backup as a task" to "backup as a verifiable business continuity capability."
