Windows 10 Support Gets a Quiet Reprieve

Microsoft quietly extended the free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 devices, pushing the cutoff date from October 2026 to October 2027 without making a formal announcement. Windows 10 users can now sign up for an additional year of patches at any time before October 2027. This extension is likely due in part to the fact that hundreds of millions of PCs still run Windows 10, and upgrading isn't always simple or cheap (take a look at our Windows 10 to 11 upgrade guide), especially with new PC prices climbing due to the ongoing AI-driven RAM and storage crunch.

This is where refurbished hardware becomes an increasingly beneficial alternative, offering a solution to long wait times and rising costs of new hardware.

In addition to the difficulty of obtaining new hardware, there is the question of whether your recovery process works when the replacement hardware differs from the original. Semiconductor lead times reached 40 weeks in early 2026, prompting analysts to cut server shipment growth forecasts for the year. This means that when a client's server fails, the replacement is increasingly a refurbished unit, a different vendor's model, or whatever happens to be in stock — not a like-for-like swap. A restore test that only boots on the original hardware is not helpful in that scenario.
