The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act aims to better protect patient information with tightened regulations. However, some institutions haven't adapted their systems and are at risk of heavy consequences.

In January 2015, it was found that the nonprofit Anchorage Community Mental Health Services was using outdated systems like Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 that no longer had routine security patching. This resulted in a $150,000 HIPAA sanction for the organization.
